About Living History

Below I answered the most frequently asked questions about living history and my work. If you do not find what interests you, feel free to contact me via the provided details!

What is it exactly?
The methodology of Living History is an interactive tool for teaching by playing. During each program, at least one person in an appropriate attire of a certain era presents to tell a story about a historical event, person, or object, or to demonstrate something with their behaviour to the audience.

How can a Living History Interpreter perform?
– by “stepping out” from a certain point of history;
– in a so-called spirit concept, in which case the character is aware of all events, from his/her era to the present day;
– as a person of today who wears his historical clothing “only” for illustrative purposes.
Which of the above we use is always determined by the venue, the circumstances and the audience.

Is this an acting job?
Partly. The method combines performing arts, a thorough knowledge of history, and teaching skills, as we need to have the appropriate background knowledge and the ability to teach by playing at the same time. A particular difficulty is that while an actor is given the finished script, a Living History Interpreter must work out the performance and write a script alone as he/she must keep the historical authenticity in mind as much as possible.

If someone gets dressed in a costume and performs in front of an audience, is the performance can be called a Living History program?
Unfortunately not. What divides Living History Interpreters from people dressed in costume is that they strive for historical authenticity down to the tiniest details, from their dress through their hairstyle to their accessories. In addition, it is essential to keep in mind that the presence of an interpreter must always have a reason and purpose. Otherwise, it is a general experience that our guests and audience cannot place the phenomenon.
Just imagine! You walk through a medieval castle and find yourself facing a knight dressed in armour. What would you think of this situation on an average weekday? What if castle games were going on at the venue that day?

Is this just for kids?
What is unique in Living History programs is that they can be implemented in so many ways that they can provide an enjoyable recreational activity for all ages.

How can these programs colourize your event?
Whether it is a family day or a professional event, a Living History program can always be a fresh and unique highlight on the palette. Here the performers not only do entertain, but also they must have up-to-date knowledge on the subject.

What program options are available at A Queen’s Stories?
The programs I offer are very diverse, here I summarized the most frequently ordered forms.

Can I see the same performance in every location?
Not necessarily. Mostly I develop all programs tailored to the location and occasion. An exception to this is if you specifically want to order a previously developed presentation.

Can I request more than one interpreter for my event?
Naturally. Over the past few years, I have been working with such Living History Interpreters whose work I know well, so I can certainly recommend the right person or team to suit your needs.
